Emirates Air Line reaches construction milestone May 18, 2012
Another milestone has been reached in the construction of the Emirates Air Line project in London, as all 34 cabins have embarked on their inaugural flight to assess their load-bearing capacity.
When completed, which is scheduled to occur in summer, the transport link will travel above the River Thames along 1.1 km of cabling.
It is expected to be able to transport as many as 2,500 individuals every hour in each direction, or the equivalent of 30 London buses.
The structure will connect the ExCeL centre and the O2 Arena, as well as create another interchange between the Docklands Light Railway and Jubilee Line.
These extensive safety tests follow the completion of the cables and three towers required for the innovative development.
London mayor Boris Johnson previously said: "The Emirates Air Line will be an exciting and innovative mode of transport, easing travel for thousands and offering spectacular bird's eye vistas of our majestic Thames."
